We recently dropped off this scrap book with the current Lion’s Club in Seal Beach, and while we haven’t heard back from them yet, we think it’s still worth sharing.
The Lions Club main organization was founded in Chicago, back in 1917, by Melvin Jones, a Chicago Businessman, as a secular entity dedicated to applying the talents of their members to improving local communities.
In the correspondence included with the scrapbook is this advice to Public Relations Chairman De Forest back in the early 60’s (likely 1962):
“Your scrap book will become a very important item in your club. Have it at all club meetings. Have your members bring in clippings. You will note before long that the members will be looking at the book regularly to see if their clippings have been put in. We know it is a proven fact that we all like to see our name in print.” [emphasis added]
Ain’t that the truth?
